Late 19thC Berlin Hallmarked Silver Centre Piece By Franz Mosgau
A stunning and important late nineteenth century silver German Table Centre Piece in the Louis XV style.
Also known as Planters or a Jardiniere, this important piece is by the renowned silversmith, Franz Mosgau, with crisp hallmarks for Berlin.
With 450g of continental (800) silver, it has a luxury feel. It is 40cm long end to end, 23cm wide and 14cm at its highest point. It also comes with its original brass liner, which has a beautiful patina. The liner fits precisely into the silver base.
The watertight brass liner was designed to allow fresh flowers to be displayed, but it is equally suitable for serving a stunning fruits de mer over ice, or as an amazing fruit bowl.
In lovely condition, this centre piece would have graced an exclusive German dinning table around the end of the 1800’s, bringing real grace and style to any formal occasion.
The Louis XV style, in the decorative arts, was a Rococo style characterized by the superior craftsmanship of 18th-century cabinetmaking in France. The proponents of this style produced exquisite Rococo decor for the enormous number of homes owned by royalty and nobility during the reign of Louis XV and later used as inspiration by Franz Mosgau.
